M.P. Renukacharya gets a reprieve

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Honalli M.P. Renukacharya won some reprieve with the city police deeming on Tuesday that there was no substance in the complaint made by nurse B.V. Jayalakshmi that he had threatened to pour acid on her and pointed a revolver at her.

Accordingly, the police have dropped the charges of extortion, outraging the modesty of woman and breach of peace that were booked against Mr. Renukacharya on the basis of Ms. Jayalakshmi's complaint to the Chandra Layout police on April 20.

During investigation, the police found that the written complaint and statements by Ms. Jayalakshmi did not tally with the statements of the witnesses named by her. "Thus, there is no evidence to prove her complaint that Mr. Renukacharya had threatened to pour acid on her and pointed a revolver at her," Commissioner of Police Neelam Achuta Rao said in a press release here on Tuesday.

The Chandra Layout police had booked a case against the MLA under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 387 (extortion), 504 (breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (insulting the modesty of woman).

Now, the police would drop the Sections 387, 504 and 509, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) K.V. Sharathchandra told The Hindu .

However, the police have found evidence to proceed against Mr. Renukacharya in regard to Ms. Jayalakshmi's charge that he had threatened her that he would paste her obscene photographs near her house and a nursing school where she was employed, the release said.
