Bangalore: Kannada Development Authority (KDA) will bring pressure on the State Government to make Kannada learning compulsory in all schools in Karnataka with immediate effect, including those that teach the ICSE and CBSE syllabus, said Siddalingiah, Chairman of KDA.

Speaking after launching "Janamanadalli Kannada" campaign organised by Kannada Anushtana Mandali here on Tuesday to popularise Kannada medium of instruction in schools, he said KDA was launching several programmes in border districts.

He had returned from a tour of places around Belgaum and he would next be visiting Kasargod district. KDA would donate 500 books to libraries in 50 Kannada-medium schools in the district, which was now part of Kerala.

Mr. Siddalingiah said that there was a need to create awareness about richness and antiquity of Kannada language, especially in Bangalore.

Mandali president R.A. Prasad said the issue of medium of instruction had become a mess because of a series of litigations.

    Lack of enthusiasm

The Government, which showed great enthusiasm in introducing English in Kannada-medium schools, did not show the same enthusiasm about making Kannada compulsory in all English-medium schools, he said. It was a myth that all English-knowing people got jobs, he added.

Chi. Srinivasaraju and N.S. Sangolli spoke.
