Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Government on Tuesday sent 24 companies of paramilitary forces to Rajasthan, where violence claimed several lives.

Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and Special Secretary (Internal Security) A.K. Kumawat were in constant touch with the Rajasthan Chief Secretary and the police chief, the Home Ministry spokesman said.

The Rajasthan Government sought 20 companies on Monday, apprehending trouble in Dausa. The Home Ministry sent 24 companies, drawn from the Border Security Force, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Rapid Action Force. The spokesman said the State Government wanted 15 more companies and the Centre would make available the additional force.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje apprised Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil of the situation in Dausa at the National Development Council meeting here. Later, she rushed back to the State.
