NEW DELHI: Taking cognisance of high passenger rush on the service between Indraprastha and Dwarka sub-city, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has added four new trains to its existing fleet. With these, the number of trains owned by Delhi Metro has gone up to 64.
Peak hours
With the introduction of the four new trains, the frequency during peak hours on Line 3 has been reduced to 4.5 minutes from 5 minutes earlier and the number of train trips on this line has gone up from 349 to 362. The DMRC will gradually induct six more trains later this year, which will be distributed among all the three lines. These trains are being manufactured by a consortium of ROTEM (Korea) and Mitsubishi Electric Company (Japan) and Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan) at Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML), Bangalore. About 5.25 lakh commuters travel on the Delhi Metro daily, with nearly 2-lakh travelling on Line 3 alone. Peak hours on Line 3 extend from 8 a.m. to 12-30 p.m. and 4-30 p.m. to 8-30 p.m. In addition, the peak hours on Line 2 -- Central Secretariat to Vishwavidyalaya -- have been extended from 8 a.m. to 8-30 p.m. instead of 8 a.m. to 12-30 p.m. and 4-30 p.m. to 8-30 p.m. earlier. Trains will run at a frequency of 4 minutes during this time and the number of train trips would stand increased from 397 to 436. On Line 1-- Shahdara to Rithala -- the frequency of trains will continue to be 4 minutes during peak hours, from 8 a.m. to 12-30 p.m. and 4-30 p.m. to 8-30 p.m.
