Banks to accept IT cheques, challans

HYDERABAD: Facilities for accepting cheques and challans towards payment of income-tax have been made at branches of SBI and its associates, all public sector banks, Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd, HDFC, ICICI, IDBI and UTI Banks, according to a press release issued by the Reserve Bank of India. - Special Correspondent

Official transferred

ADILABAD: Adilabad Joint Director of Agriculture C. Sayanna was transferred on Tuesday in the wake of Sunday's lathicharge on farmers. Cotton farmers were caned by policemen when they resorted to stone-pelting which left eight persons injured. Farmers were protesting against denial of seed to them because of inadequate quantity. - Staff Reporter

State urged to stop Polavaram works

HYDERABAD: The Project Evacuees' Association of Polavaram has asked the State Government to stop forthwith project works in view of a clarification by Pradipta Ghosh, Secretary, Department of Forest and Environment, that they were illegal even if taken up in non-forest areas without forest clearance. - Special Correspondent

CPI protests

ANANTAPUR: The activists of the CPI led by party leaders — M.V. Ramana, K. Ramakrishna, C. Jaffer, P. Narayanaswamy, Mallikarjuna — and others staged a dharna in front of the Tehsildar's office here on Tuesday protesting the removal of temporary shelters raised by the poor in three acres of Nidimamidi Matham lands and Government land near Samatagram. They condemned use of force and alleged that the Government was keeping quiet on the lands occupied by influential persons around Hyderabad. — Staff Reporter

Transfer orders kept in abeyance

KADAPA: Transfer of employees in excess of a stipulated ratio in a district in Rayalaseema led to keeping in abeyance of transfer orders to senior assistants and superintendents of the four districts in Regional Directorate of Medical and Health here. Expressing concern over the development, district president of Andhra Pradesh NGOs Association V. Veera Reddy demanded action against senior assistants and superintendents who flouted transfer norms. An agitation will be launched if the transfer orders were not released forthwith, he warned. — Staff Reporter

Man held, stolen property recovered

KURNOOL: The police arrested a person identified as B. Doulanna, 20, here on Tuesday and recovered stolen property worth Rs. 6 lakhs from him. Ramnatha, Deputy SP, told reporters that Doulanna allegedly burgled three houses last year at Balaji Nagar, Ramachandra Nagar and Ramalingeswara Nagar in the city. He was allegedly involved in several other offences. Inspector Sivasankar Reddy was present at the press meet. — Special Correspondent

Emergency service

ANANTAPUR: The 108 Emergency Service of the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) completed one year in the district on Tuesday.

The service supervisors here Raghavendra and Nagaraju stated that they had attended 1,175 emergency situations during the last one year, including 375 road accidents, 130 medical emergencies, 74 suicide cases, 110 pregnancy cases among others. — Staff Reporter

Worker electrocuted

KADAPA: A worker Gangaraju (35) was electrocuted in Sri Veeranjaneyaswamy temple at Gandi in Chakrayapet mandal while switching on lights in the temple on Monday evening.

Gangaraju, who worked with a coconut seller before the temple, had been extending day-to-day assistance to temple authorities for the last two decades, according to police.

The Chakrayapet police registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Doctor's house burgled

KADAPA: Burglars broke into the house of a doctor and TDP leader Jayarami Reddy in Post Office Street in Porumamilla in the early hours of Tuesday and stole cash and jewels worth Rs. 1 lakh.
