A red-letter day for them

Pradip Kumar Das

Matriculation results hold elation and disappointments for three convicts

CUTTACK: Inmates of Choudwar circle jail and Koraput district jail were waiting for this day with folded hands and prayers on their lips.

For three inmates of each of these jails, the day was extremely edgy because they were waiting for the matriculation results. Devendra Hiala, a rape convict serving eight years rigorous imprisonment in Koraput jail was elated as he learnt that he has passed the examination securing first division marks. But the brother duo of Guru Machha and Budu Machha failed in the examination. .

Mixed results

"The Machha brothers are now determined to clear the test next time positively," said jail superintendent D.N. Panda quoting the inmates. In Choudwar jail, two of the three inmates who appeared the test have passed in second division while the result of Bikram Singh (22) who is serving a seven-year RI for rape is kept withheld. Two life convicts for murder — Susant Behera (32) and Sanatan Samal (35) have cleared the examinations successfully bringing cheers to all inmates, informed the jail senior superintendent B.K. Mohanty.
