State felicitates Florence Nightingale Awardee Subasini Jena

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Government on Tuesday felicitated health worker Subasini Jena, who received the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award from President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for her 17-years of dedicated service in remote villages Kalahandi and Nuapada districts.

All the top state functionaries of Health and Family Welfare were present at a special function organised to laud achievement of Ms. Jena.

Utter devotion

"She has relentlessly tried to render health services to the most needy tribals of the State. Her devotion towards the cause will surely inspire other health workers, who have been working in inhospitable areas," state Health Minister Duryodhan Majhi said on the occasion.

Ms. Jena started her career as auxiliary nurse-midwife (ANM) in remote Biswanathpur Primary Health Centre in 1990. She reached above 40 tribal villages on foot through forest areas.

The ANM was shifted to Khariar Community Health Centre of Nuapada district in 1992 and since then she had been making efforts to make different schemes such as malaria eradication, anti-leprosy and other health programmes available to tribal people.

Ms. Jena had received Rs. 50,000 and a citation towards Florence Nightingale award on May 12 at New Delhi.

Responsibility

She was among 17 nurses, who received the award, which was last presented in 1986.

Ms. Jena described as to how she faced difficult situations during her service period but never shied away from the responsibility entrusted on her.

Among others Health Secretary Chinmaya Basu and Director of Health Service Usha Patnnaik were present on the occasion.
