CUTTACK: A record 59.09 per cent of regular students passed the annual High School Certificate (HSC) examination-2007, results of which were released on Tuesday. Out of 3,22,979 regular students who appeared for the examination in March, 1,89,404 students, including 84,239 girls, passed. Announcing the results, School and Mass Education Minister Bishnu Charan Das attributed the record performance to adoption of certain stress-free and student-friendly measures like 10 minutes additional time given to students to enable them to acclimatise themselves with the question paper and appointment of headmasters in all high schools. As was reported earlier, the result of eight-year-old wonder kid Millennium Bismay was withheld. The boy was allowed to sit for the examination following a High Court order. "The answer scripts of the boy have been evaluated but the results are kept secret as per the direction of the court," the Minister said.
Toppers
Priyanka Das of Balasore Zilla School topped by securing 727 marks (96.93 per cent) out of 750, which was also an all-time record. Samir Kumar Jena (721) of Udala School stood second. Jyoti Ranjan Barik of Puri shared the third place with Mihir Ranjan Satapathy of Bhubaneswar, with both of them securing 719 marks each. Among the regular students, 43,158 passed in the first division, 68,889 in the second division and the remaining in the third division. In the non-regular stream, of 56,803 students who appeared, 27,887 passed. While 60.94 per cent boys passed the examination, the pass percentage among girls was only 56.93. Out of 34 students occupying place in the `top 10', only eight were girls, showing that unlike the trend in other parts of he country, boys continue to do better than girls.
Vocational subject
Bhubaneswar: Talking to newsmen here, Mr. Das said that the annual matriculation examination would be held at all high schools from next year. Till this year, the high school board examination was being held at select centres throughout the State. He said from next year students would appear for 800 marks instead of 750. The additional marks would be for vocational subject, he said.
