Rs.200 cr. for development works in town panchayats

SIVAKASI: The State Government has allotted funds to the tune of Rs.200 crore for the All Town Panchayat Anna Marumalarchi Thittam scheme, which is introduced from this financial year, said Minister for Local Administration and Rural Development, M.K. Stalin, here on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the Tamirabarani Integrated Drinking Water Scheme for Sivakasi and Thiruthangal municipalities, he said that the objective of the new scheme for town panchayats would be to carry out development works such as creation of ponds, laying of cement roads and setting up of libraries would be taken up in all the 561 town panchayats in the State.

Stating that each year three town panchayats would be taken up for implementing the development works, he said there were 10 town panchayats in the district.

The State Government waived debts to the tune of Rs.760 crore of local bodies in various banks keeping in view that the local bodies should have the wherewithal to come up with new programmes that would benefit the public, he said and added that this decision was taken following requests from local bodies.

In Virudhunagar district alone the Government had waived debts to the tune of Rs.22.92 crore, the Minister informed.

Achievements of State Government

Highlighting the achievements of the State Government, he said that the State was keen in extending all help to improve facilities and promised that the Government would soon bring underground drainage facility to the Sivakasi Municipality.

The Minister also distributed welfare measures to the tune of Rs.6.55 crore to 7,319 beneficiaries.

He also laid the foundation stone for the Tamirabarani Integrated Drinking Water scheme in Srivilliputtur Municipality.

Addressing the gathering, Minister for Health, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, said that with the inauguration of the integrated drinking water scheme the unresolved problem in the district for so long had been solved.

He also asked the Local Administration Minister to find ways to improve basic amenities in the Sivakasi Municipality.

For, Sivakasi was next to Tirupur in generating revenue for the Government through taxes.

Presiding over the function, the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said that under the free colour television distribution scheme so far 19,904 had been benefited in the district.

The Minister for School Education, Thangam Thennarasu, K. Jeyaraman, Regional Director, Municipal Administration, Tirunelveli, N. Gopal, Chief Engineer, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD), K. Rathinavel, Superintending Engineer, TWAD, also spoke.
