Police recover a two-line suicide note from his pocket

NEW DELHI: Dr. Umesh Chandra Sharma, Head of Emergency Services at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals here, was found dead inside his chamber on Tuesday under highly mysterious circumstances.

A two-line suicide note recovered from his pocket said no one should be held responsible for his death. After preliminary investigations, the police said they suspected that the doctor committed suicide by taking poison. The body has been sent to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences for autopsy.

According to the police, Dr. Sharma complained of gastritis and stomach-ache on Monday night and was admitted to the hospital around 11 p.m. An hour after he was discharged around 5 a.m., he came back to the hospital to re-join duty. He then took a round of the Emergency department and retired to his chamber.

``An hour later, the team of doctors that had attended on him the previous night went to his chamber to inquire about his health and found him lying unconscious on a bed. The doctors tried to revive him, but in vain. They called up Police Control Room at 8-40 a.m. The police found a suicide note in his pocket that said he was putting an end to his life and no one should be held responsible for it," the police said.

Dr. Sharma, in his late 30s, had been associated with the hospital for eight years and his latest stint as Head of Emergency Services began last May. He had obtained his MBBS degree from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and a diploma in Cardiology from Georgia.

Senior Consultant (ENT) Arvind Soni, a colleague and neighbour, said: ``I had known him for long as my neighbour. He always sported a smile and was very energetic. He was a marvellous human being and a professional who knew his job well. I usually used to meet him at the bus stop where he came to see off his daughter to school. I was shocked to know about his death. It is difficult to imagine that he could have taken such an extreme step."

Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals issued a statement expressing ``deep regret" at the untimely demise of Dr. Sharma.
