NEW DELHI: An alleged gangster has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police at Sarita Vihar here. The police claim to have seized a country-made firearm and two live cartridges from him.

Acting on a tip-off that a western UP-based criminal, Narinder, would come to Delhi from neighbouring Noida in a bus, the police laid a trap near Kalindi Kunj and arrested him on Monday.

During interrogation, the 27-year-old Narinder purportedly disclosed that he was arrested for the first time in an attempt-to-murder case in 1998. He remained in jail for two months, after which he was released on bail. He then allegedly took to crime and began committing robberies and car thefts along with his accomplices, Lallu and Vinod. Narinder was again arrested in 2000 and remained in jail for about six months. In 2003, he was once again arrested following an encounter with the police.

Meanwhile, he also contested village pradhan elections and was elected unopposed. He was released from jail last September. He then allegedly murdered Rajinder, a brick kiln brick owner, after he refused to pay protection money. He then started extorting money from other businessmen. The police said he had recently targeted businessmen in Dadri and Gautam Budh Nagar in UP. He allegedly tried to eliminate another brick kiln owner after he refused to pay up extortion money. In another case, he allegedly opened fire at a marble dealer in Dabri. According to the police, Narinder is involved in as many as 22 cases, most of which have been registered in Dadri. He was wanted in at least nine heinous cases. The UP police have been informed of the arrest.
