Nurses' complaint: campaign launched

KOCHI: Reports about some nurses complaining of being cheated by a city-based recruiting agency came as a surprise to the police officials and the Manpower Exporters' Association. Neither of the agencies had received any complaints in this regard.

It was reported that the complainants had approached the Union Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs after the agency failed to provide them with jobs in the United States of America.

"The city police have started an aggressive awareness campaign. As a result, the number of complaints could be brought down to one or two every month, compared to nearly 20 sometime ago," said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

Method evolved

The police said they had evolved a foolproof mechanism to arrest such incidents. "We have a system in place where information will be provided if agencies conduct recruitment drives on their premises," Mr. Abraham said.

Recruitment agencies have been asked to conduct sessions only after securing permission in writing from the city police.

Verification process

"This will give us time to verify the history of the agencies," he said. The Manpower Exporters' Association have extended its support to the police.

"We are insisting that all registered agencies display the guidelines issued for overseas recruitment prominently," said Chacko T. Varghese, general secretary of the association. "We have been spotting attempts towards cheating and preventing them. Recently, an attempt to cheat more than 100 nurses was foiled by our timely intervention," Mr. Varghese said. The city police and the association have been interacting regularly and holding monthly meetings to review the progress of the drive. "In the light of the new case, we have decided to convene an emergency meeting," he said.
