COIMBATORE: The farm gate price of broiler in the district is at Rs. 37 a kg now and on an average remained above Rs. 30 a kg during the last one year. An official of the Broiler Co-ordination Committee said that after the bird flu problem last February, prices revived in May and had remained above Rs. 30 almost every week. The broiler production in the district was estimated to be over 60 lakh birds a week. "With good prices many farmers went in for expansion," he said. By mid May last year, the prices were Rs. 35 to Rs. 38 a kg. And, now it was Rs. 37 a kg. However, the demand was expected to come down in the first two weeks of June due to monsoon setting in Kerala and summer vacation coming to an end. Normally, the prices also slumped during this period. Though the broiler price remained above Rs. 30 a kg during almost all weeks in the last one year, the production cost had gone up due to the maize price. Maize was one of the important components in poultry feed and an increase in its cost hit the poultry sector. The production cost of poultry feed was about Rs. 30 a kg and the average broiler price was Rs. 32 to Rs. 33 a kg.
