Punjab crisis

By rejecting the apology tendered by the Dera Sacha Sauda, the apex body of Singh Sahibs has aggravated the crisis triggered by an alleged act of sacrilege by the Dera chief. The move will polarise Punjabis across the globe. As pointed out in the article "Talibanisation of Sikhism" (May 30), fundoos are using the issue to strengthen their constituencies.

The article has exposed the caste underpinnings in the religion and the consequent destructive tendency underlying religious fervour. It is unfortunate that the secular teachings of great gurus have been ignored by their self-styled votaries. The crucial question is: how can the misguided loyalists of various faiths be made to realise that their intolerance is far removed from the true spirit of religion?
