Viduthalai Chiruthaigal stage demonstration

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: The activists of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal, led by its general secretary Thol. Thirumavalavan, staged a demonstration near the Periyar statue at Chidambaram on Wednesday, condemning the police action against those, who sought justice for the suspicious death of a youth.

Twenty-one-year old B. Manikandan of Kannngudi, who was working with a private financier on the Perumal Temple Street at Chidambaram, suddenly fell sick on May 22. When his parents rushed him to a private hospital, the doctors declared him as brought dead. Later, the body was taken to government hospital for post-mortem.

When the relatives and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal cadres blocked the road on May 23, seeking action against the financier, the police resorted to lathi charge. Mr. Thirumavalavan said even though Viduthalai Chiruthaigal formed part of the ruling alliance, the police were foisting false cases on its cadres.

Though complaints had been filed in regard to the youth's death at Chidambaram, the police remained inactive. The caste-based atrocities continued at places such as Sedapalayam, Marungur, Thiruvathigai and Vanamadevi. If the police continued with their indifference, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal would personally take it up with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, he said.
