VELLORE: The four trains that were being operated between Vellore Cantonment and Villupuram stations via Tiruvannamalai on the metre gauge will be stopped from June 1 in order to facilitate the broad gauge conversion work on the route, according to an official of the Tiruchi railway division. The Tirupathi-Rameswaram Meenakshi Express and the Villupuram-Tirupathi passenger trains that were being operated on the route were stopped almost seven years ago on the Tirupathi-Katpadi section and Katpadi-Vellore Cantonment section. Trains were operated only between Vellore Cantonment and Villupuram. Once the conversion work on the Tirupathi-Katpadi section was completed about four years ago, passenger trains were operated on the newly laid broad gauge track between Katpadi and Tirupathi. Work on gauge conversion between Katpadi and Vellore Cantonment is nearing completion, and once this is completed, it will facilitate the operation of trains on the broad gauge track from Vellore Cantonment to Chennai via Katpadi. One of the major portions that has been completed is the railway bridge across the Palar in Vellore. The railway bridge above the Katpadi-Jolarpet broad gauge section between Katpadi and Latheri close to the Katpadi-Gudiyatham Road, where the Chennai-Jolarpet track and Katpadi-Villupuram track cross each other, remains to be completed.
Minister inspects work
Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu, who recently inspected the works on the Katpadi-Vellore Cantonment section, told newspersons that the work on gauge conversion between Vellore Cantonment and Villupuram would be taken up simultaneously.
