Gulbarga lacks women's colleges

Demand for exclusive degree college for women in the district

  • Over 1,000 girls passed PU exam from government colleges
  • Government urged to sanction five more PU colleges

GULBARGA: Majority of the girls who have passed their pre-university examination in the district are likely to discontinue their education owing to lack of exclusive degree college for women in the district.

The State Government, which recently decided to sanction 104 degree colleges, including exclusive colleges for women, has not conceded the long-pending demand of Gulbarga for one college.

The North Eastern Teachers' Forum, which had been forefront in demanding a government degree college for women, has apprised Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy of the faced by the girls, particularly those coming from the poorer sections of society.

Working president of the forum M.B. Ambalagi said here on Wednesday that more than 1,000 girls had passed their pre-university examination from government colleges in the district this year and most of them would be forced to discontinue education owing to high fee structure and donation demanded by the private colleges in the district.

In Gulbarga, 400 girls had passed the PU examination and of them 140 had achieved distinction and passed in first class and 130 had secured second class. Although there are a few government degree colleges offering co-education, most of the girls would not be getting seats in these government degree colleges owing to tough competition.

Prof. Ambalagi said that there were four degree colleges for women in Gulbarga and the girls, particularly those who had passed from the government pre-university colleges were not in a position to meet the high fee structures and donations demanded by these colleges.

Prof Ambalagi said that the Government should consider the demand of Gulbarga District for a government degree college for women sympathetically and sanction it immediately. He said that the government should sanction at least five more government pre-university colleges in Gulbarga.
