Dola eighth in qualifier

KOLKATA: Dola Banerjee was the lone Indian to be among the top 10 at the end of the FITA round qualification of the recurve bow event for women in the 20th Golden Arrow Grand Prix archery championship, which forms the third leg of the Meteksan World Cup, at Antalya in Turkey on Tuesday.

The Indian team, comprising Dola, Chekrovolu Swuro and L. Bombayla Devi, totalled 3873 points to finish 15th in the 16-team field.

According to information received here, Dola, with 1330 points, was eighth, Chekrovolu Swuro, with 1297, was 34th and Punya Prabha was 61st with 1268 points.

All three made it to the main draw, while National champion, Bombayla, was eliminated with a total of 1246 points for the 77th place. Only top 64 qualify for the knock-out elimination round in the individual section and top 16 teams qualify for the team event.

As per the ranking, Dola is to meet Femke Boonen of the Netherlands, Chekrovolu will clash with Jennifer Nichols of the U.S. and Punya will face fourth-ranked Korean Lee Sung Jin in the opening rounds of individual championship.

Significantly, Dola had won the individual gold medal in the 2005 meet and India won the silver medal in the women's team event.

In this edition, India's first round opponent would be the second-placed China.

At halfway stage, the Indian men in recurve section did rather badly with Tarundeep Rai occupying 29th position with 576 points from two rounds (90m and 70m). Harish Chand Kerai was the next best at 35th with 573 and was followed by Priyank at 45th with 570 and Rahul Banerjee at 55th with 567.

With two more rounds of competition left in 50m and 30m, the Indians might stage a recovery. — Special Correspondent
