Sethuraman clinches championship on progressive score

daikanal: Fourteen-year-old S.P. Sethuraman of Chennai became the youngest-ever champion in the 55th State chess championship organised by Mount Chess Academy and Indian Chess School here on Wednesday.

Sethuraman and Arun Karthik, also of Chennai finished on top with nine points each, but Sethuraman emerged champion on progressive score and bagged the prize money of Rs.30,000. Karthik had to be content with runner-up spot.

Ram S. Krishnan of Chennai and S. Nitin of Salem finished third and fourth respectively with 8.5 points each. The top four will represent TN in the National `B' championship at Dindigul from June 10.

Karthik posts win

At Madurai, M.H. Karthik of Billiards Kingdom defeated Vicky of Pot Black Centre 59-25, 30-50, 50-35 in the third annual district-level snooker tournament on Wednesday.

Joint winners

At Dindigul, the final between City Police (Chennai) and host Indus Hockey Club in the sixth annual Antony Memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament was abandoned due to light failure 10 minutes from close at the GHSS ground, Panjampatti.

At that time, Indus Hockey Club was leading by a solitary goal scored by Vijaya Kumar in the 13th minute. However, the teams were declared joint winners.

In the third place match, Thirunagar Hockey Club (Madurai) defeated St. Mary's Hockey Club (Dindigul) 5-4 in sudden death. At the end of regulation time, the teams were level 1-1. In the tie-breaker, the teams scored three goals each.

Sanjana in semifinals
