Pirated VCDs, DVDs seized

CHENNAI: A total of 21,285 pirated VCDs/DVDs and MP3, valued at Rs.97 lakh, were seized by the Video Piracy Cell of the CB CID in searches in the State in the last few days.

The seizures included VCDs/DVDs of new Tamil films , `Arputhatheevu,' `Karuppasamy Kuthagaikarar,' `Parattai Enkira Azhagusundaram,' `Chennai-600028,' `Naan Avanillai,' `Unnale Unnale' and VCDs of English, Hindi and Telugu films, according to a release. — Special Correspondent

Haj Committee invites applications

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Haj Committee has invited applications from Muslims residing in Tamil Nadu, who are intending to perform Haj pilgrimage during Haj - 2007 by air. Necessary applications along with guidelines can be obtained from the Administrative Officer, Tamil Nadu State Haj Committee, Rosy Tower, Third Floor, 13 (7) Mahatma Gandhi Road, Chennai - 34 from June 1 against a payment of Rs. 100 per application by means of pay order or demand draft in favour of the Tamil Nadu State Haj Committee payable at Chennai. The last date for the receipt of filled-in application is June 30, according to an official release. — Special Correspondent

3 motorcyclists die in accident

TIRUCHI: Three persons on a motorcycle died in a road accident on the Tiruchi-Karur national highway at Sirugamani in the early hours on Wednesday.

Police said Kamaraj (20), the two-wheeler rider, Rajalingam (40) and Sathish (16) were proceeding on the motorcycle towards Kulithalai from Tiruchi when the vehicle rammed into a stationary lorry parked on the roadside. All the three were killed on the spot.

The Jeeyapuram police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

NMR services to resume today

Coimbatore: The Southern Railway - Palakkad Division has announced that train services on the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) would resume from May 31.

The train service from Mettuppalayam to Udhagamandalam was disrupted from May 28 following a massive landslip between Hillgrove and Coonoor stations on May 27.

Huge boulders rolled onto the track damaging it for 60 metres. Besides, flash floods washed away the embankment for about 15 meters.

The damages were to the tune of Rs 40 lakh.

Nearly 150 railway officials worked round-the-clock to restore the track, a railway release said. — Staff Reporter

Government advocates elevated

CHENNAI: Four Government advocates in the Madras High Court have been elevated as Additional Government Pleaders by the Tamil Nadu Government.

By an order dated May 25, the Government elevated I. Paranthaman, Edwin Prabakaran, S. Rajasekaran and D. Srinivasan as Additional Government Pleaders to represent the State in civil and writ matters in the High Court.

Two others — G. Sankaran and M. Dhandapani — were elevated as Special Government Pleaders. Another Special Government Pleader was removed from the panel. — Special Correspondent

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.32 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. — Special Correspondent

Labourer murdered

Nagercoil: A labourer was murdered by some unidentified persons on Tuesday night.

A police team recovered the body of Abdul Kulam (33) with multiple cut injuries from a coconut grove at Thittuvilai.

Man ends life

Nagercoil: A labourer committed suicide by hanging himself in his house here on Wednesday.

According to police, Victor of Vaniyakudi took the extreme step after a quarrel with his wife.

Stone for permanent houses laid

Nagercoil: The Tourism Minister, N. Suresh Rajan, laid the foundation stone for the construction of 51 permanent houses for tsunami-affected fishermen at Vavathurai near Kanyakumari on Wednesday.

The Lions International will construct the houses.

The Minister also said that the power lines running in the area would be relocated for the construction.

100 per cent pass

Tuticorin: Sakthi Vinayakar Hindu Vidyalaya, the only school under Central Board of Secondary Education here, has registered 100 per cent pass in the recently conducted standard X examinations.

The school has been scoring 100 per cent results since its inception in 1981, sources said.

Of the 51 students who wrote the examination, T. Shenbaga Priya topped with 477 out of 500 marks.

"Change alignment of Sethu project"

RAMANATHAPURAM: Members of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh on Wednesday staged a demonstration against the Sethu project saying that it would damage the Ramar Bridge. Bharathi Rajan, organiser, led the protest held at Pamban near here. - Staff Reporter

Murdered

ERODE: A 25-year-old woman was found murdered and the police suspect that some persons raped her and later killed her.

According to police, the woman was living with her parents in Chinnapallam Samiyar Thottam, Ammapet.

Due to some domestic quarrel, she discarded her first and second husbands and was living separately.

The police said she was having illicit intimacy with some persons.

Meanwhile her dead body was located on Tuesday evening, with injuries.

The Ammapet police have registered a case and further investigation is on.

Flying colours

ERODE: Four students of a polytechnic college in Komarapalayam have bagged the State first rank by scoring centum.

A release from Sri Ragavendra Polytechnic College says V. Vivekanandan, U.

Arun, L. Kokila, and P. Pravinkumar have scored 600 out of 600 in Electronics and Communication Engineering programme to secure the rank.

And, the college has bagged a State second rank as well: M. Prakash has got 591/600 in Computer Science.

Besides, as many as 166 students have scored centum in subjects, adds the release.

Turmeric prices down

ERODE: Due to poor inflow of and demand for turmeric in the Regulated Market here, the price of a quintal of turmeric has come down to Rs. 2,029. In the open market it is Rs. 2,067.

According to sources at the market, the reason for fall in prices has to do with the poor demand in North India.

It has been down the entire month.

Sources say only those farmers urgently in need of cash sell their goods.

The others have stocked their produce awaiting better price.

The maximum a quintal fetched this year was Rs. 2,300.
