NEW DELHI: Achin Bansal from Punjab has topped the All-India Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, the results of which were announced on Wednesday. Ankita Sharma - whose all India rank is 55 - has topped the list of girls. Achin and Ankita are from IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai Zones. Of the around 2,43,000 students who appeared for the IIT-JEE this year, 7,200 candidates have been found eligible, informed IIT Delhi Registrar, Col. (retd.) Rajendra Singh on Wednesday. There are 5,537 seats in IITs at Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai, Roorkee along with the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, and Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad, said Col. (retd.) Singh. With 2,235 students, IIT Mumbai Zone has topped the list of the number of qualifying candidates. From IIT Chennai Zone, 1,688 candidates are eligible. As many as 1,398 candidates have qualified from the Delhi Zone, and the number of students from IIT Kharagpur Zone is 733. From IIT Kanpur Zone 513 students have cleared, while 496 candidates have qualified f from IIT Roorkee Zone. The number of those who have been found eligible from IIT Guwahati Zone is 137. This year 587 of the 54,025 girls who appeared in the IIT-JEE have qualified. The counselling of students will be held between June 18-22.
