`Maidens' sweep annual State film awards

Governor urges State to extend support to the Oriya film industry

BHUBANESWAR: Rajshri Production's maiden Oriya venture `Sasughara Chalijibi' and Kadambini Media's maiden production `Kathantara' swept the annual State film awards for 2005. Of the 19 awards presented at the 18th State film awards presentation ceremony at Rabindra Mandap here on Wednesday, both the films bagged eight awards each.

Governor Rameshwar Thakur gave away the awards in presence of Culture Minister S.N.Patro, Information and Public Relations Minister Debashis Nayak, culture secretary G.N.Mohanty and culture director Goutam K. Das.

Huge hit

Known to be inspired by the Bollywood box office hit `Hum apke hai kaun', `Sasughara Chaliibi' that was a huge hit in Orissa, claimed the best actor (Siddhant Mohapatra), best actress (Anu Chaudhury), best female playback singer (Tapu Mishra), best editing (Susant Mani), best screenplay (Bijay Mishra), best child artiste (Prakruti Mishra), best art direction (Pradip Swain) and special jury award for its director Basant Sahoo.

Similarly, `Kathantara', the film based on the Orissa super cyclone, bagged the best film, best production (Iti Samant), best direction and story (Himanshu Khatua), best cinematography (Samir Mahajan), best supporting actor (Hadu), best supporting actress (Bhaswati Basu) and best audiography (Gitimugdha Sahani and Manas Chaudhury).

The best male playback singer award went to Sourav Nayak while Swarup Nayak and Pintu Nanda were the winners of the best lyricist and best comedian awards.

Addressing on the occasion, Governor Thakur urged the State government to extend a supportive role to the Oriya film industry by promoting a healthy cinema culture in the State. The distribution and exhibition systems, film clubs and societies and film award ceremonies should be provided patronage, he added.
