KOCHI: Malayalam Cine Technicians' Association (MACTA) Federation on Wednesday decided to stop work from June 15 after the producers' association rejected their demands. Their demands include a salary hike for technicians and more rights for writers. Association chairman and film director Vinayan said technicians would stay away from shooting and post-production work from June 15. He said the strike was in protest against the decision of the producers' association not to accept the request for a hike in daily allowances for drivers and other technicians. MACTA had demanded that the daily wages of drivers should be increased from Rs.150 to Rs.350. The association had also demanded a hike in the daily allowances of film unit members.
Other demands
Other demands include more rights for scriptwriters, suspension of disciplinary action against some directors and restricting the release of `super star' films to six months a year. Mr. Vinayan said the producers were trying to spread rumours against technicians who wanted to ensure basic rights. He said the 18 unions under the MACTA Federation would join the indefinite strike. The federation also came down heavily on producers, who had announced on Tuesday that they would stop production work from July 31. Reacting to the stand taken by the technicians, producers' association president Milan Jaleel said the demands put forward by the MACTA Federation would escalate the budget of a Malayalam film. Mr. Jaleel also turned down the demand for providing more rights to scriptwriters and wanted the directors to take up the responsibility of overshooting the budget of a film. The producers also decided to retrieve the losses due to the indefinite strike from the film directors. They also decided not to seek the services of those technicians who participate in the strike.
