THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will buy 1,000 buses each year through open tender mode, Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas has said. Addressing a `Meet-the-Press' organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club in connection with the first anniversary of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government, Mr. Thomas said the Motor Vehicles Department would introduce reforms to keep away agents and intermediaries from its transactions with the public. The proposal was to introduce a system for doing all transactions, including the issuance of driving license, through post. He said the Government's policy was to strengthen the public transport system, with the KSRTC deploying more buses on the roads. The KSRTC was running up a loss of around Rs.16 crore each month. In one year's time, the monthly loss would be brought down to Rs.6 crore, he said. The Minister said the mere introduction of transparent procedures for bus purchases had resulted in a saving of around Rs.3 lakh on each bus now being bought by the KSRTC. The KSRTC could save more than Rs.30 crore last year through this, he said.
