BJP demands free education for poor kids

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday demanded that the Delhi Government provide free education to the poor so that no child is denied of right of education for want of fees.

Stating that the Delhi High Court has also issued a direction in this regard, Dr. Vardhan said despite getting land at cheap rates hundreds of private schools in Delhi were not providing education free of cost to poor children as per the agreement reached by them with the Govt.

Accusing the Delhi Government of adopting an ``anti-poor'' stance, he said the Chief Minister and the Education Minister have not taken a firm stand on the issue. They have bowed before the private school owners, he charged, adding that due to this thousands of poor children have been deprived of admission to the private schools during the past many years. The BJP leader said it was because of dilly dallying on the part of the Delhi Government that the High Court had finally taken the commendable step, directing owners of private schools to admit poor children while warning that otherwise their lease would be cancelled and their recognition withdrawn.

Dr. Vardhan said it was now for the Chief Minister and the Education Minister to ensure that no poor child was deprived of the right of education in the city.
