BERHAMPUR: Residents of the Gundalavari Street in the city hit the road on Wednesday to protest against the extreme low voltage problem they had been facing for the last four months. They staged a demonstration at the office of the executive engineer of Southco, the power distribution company. The problem, which was treated seriously by officials, had to be immediately taken up after the agitation in which even women and children participated, said R. Srinivas, a resident of the area. The Hanuman Bazar Traders' Association, which also faced the problem, supported the agitating families.
Inform police
As law-abiding citizens, these agitators preferred to inform the Badabazar police before they started off for the Southco office. The Deputy General Manager (DGM) of Southco had to rush to the spot to pacify the agitators. As the protesters were not satisfied with promises, equipment needed to repair and solve the problem was brought to the area. The repair works would commence on Thursday. V. Anasuya Gupta, a housewife who took part in the agitation, said due to low voltage many electrical appliances were damaged. On Tuesday, the area suffered power shutdown from 8.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for repair work. But the problem was not solved. When they experienced extreme low voltage on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, they decided to wage a united struggle. Mr. Srinivas said the problem started when the transformer located at the City High School Road was shifted to a place near the sub-registrar's office.
