CHENNAI
: The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) will soon offer long term courses related to special education.
At present it offers two diploma courses in special education. Established by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2005, the institute aims at rehabilitating and equipping persons with two or more disabilities with skills required for independent living.
NIEPMD director Neeradha Chandramohan said an employment cell would be soon established to place the trained candidates. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, she said persons with multiple disabilities were "minorities among minorities" and therefore needed attention and care.
At NIEPMD, special educators assess a candidate's capacity and design a programme to hone his or her skills. The service is free. Deserving candidates would be given necessary aids and appliances free of cost.
The institute is also involved in conducting awareness campaigns for parents and training programmes for special educators. It is located at East Coast Road, Muthukadu, Kovalam Post. For further details, call: 27472389.
