Variety of handicrafts on display at expo

CHENNAI: Pruthibi Handicrafts Co-operative Society, an organisation of rural artisans from Orissa, is exhibiting their work at Sankara Hall, Alwarpet.

The exhibition opened on Wednesday and will be on till June 11.

The crafts on display include saris and textiles with `ikkat' prints on cotton, silk and silk cotton.

Palm leaf illustrations

Ancient palm leaf illustrations with delicate, mythological figures have found their way as bookmarks and greeting cards.

The pata chitras — wall hangers of folk paintings were once a source of education for the rural folk are based on themes from Mahabaratha, Ramayana and legends of Radha-Krishna and lord Jagannath. Stone carvings, applique works of Pipli in lampshades, bags and letter holders besides crafts from other States such as Meenakari jewellery, pearl sets, brass work and Kolkata terracotta items are on display.
