HYDERABAD: The mystery behind the abduction of a 10-month-old infant from a house at P&T Colony in Saroornagar on Sunday was solved when police arrested the baby's grandmother and a rag picker on charges of kidnap. Police said the old woman did not like her daughter getting married against her wishes and adopting an orphan. She gave away the boy to a rag picker and tried to mislead the police that the child was kidnapped. Sixtythree-year-old R. Radha claimed that two knife-wielding persons came to her house and snatched her grandson, Om, while she was feeding him. She also said that the intruders had tied her to a chair and escaped in a car waiting outside the house. However, the conflicting versions given by Radha strengthened suspicions. Moreover, there was no ransom call from the abductors. When grilled, the woman admitted to her role in the `abduction episode' and informed that she gave away the child to a rag picker, Ananthama (50), of Saroornagar. The rag picker, in turn gave away the child to a childless couple in Samsthan Narayanpur in Nalgonda district. Police rushed to the village and traced the boy. Radha's daughter, Rajya Lakshmi alias Vani, fell in love with Ganesh Sonani eight years ago while they were working in Ramoji Film City and got married against her parents wishes. The couple later shifted to Pune and adopted the infant from a child care centre three months ago. Vani came to the city on May 10. Radha and Ananthama were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
