Discussions on terrorism, organised crime and drug-trafficking

NEW DELHI: In a bid to step up bilateral security-related cooperation, India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday held yet another round of talks on issues such as terrorism, organised crime and drug-trafficking.

The visiting UAE delegation, led by Lt. Gen. Saif Abdulla Al-Shaafar, Under Secretary in the Interior Ministry, held the second round of discussion here with Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta. "Both sides agreed to move forward meaningfully in this direction and work out details of agreements and institutional arrangements to carry forward bilateral cooperation," an official spokesman said.

The two sides held talks on Tuesday at senior official level on the proposed agreements including one on transfer of sentenced prisoners. A number of terrorists and criminals are believed to be frequenting or staying in Dubai and India has been looking for their handing over for trial.

Cooperation

The UAE government has been cooperating in nabbing such elements, few of whom have already been deported. Discussions were also held on certain other aspects related to 1.4 million Indians living in the UAE.

In March, UAE Vice-President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al Makhtoum visited India along with the Interior Minister of that country and met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and several accords were inked.
