Water-rich, water-poor

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC)'s attempts to widen the water network notwithstanding, about 1.5 lakh people in the city have no access to piped drinking water. Officially, 30 per cent of the city remains unserved. There are 105 notified slums and more than 60 unnotified slums in the city, and they mostly get water through tankers.

Residents of Kundavari Kandrika, for example, have access to `piped water', but it is not potable. Adding to this, there are no Public Stand Outposts (PSOs) in the area. People here wait every day for tankers to get the elixir of life.

VMC officials argue that water supplied to PSOs is resulting in wastage, and, hence, they have been mostly withdrawn. The VMC considers the water supplied to the 4,700 PSOs in the city limits and the 300 PSOs in the surrounding areas as Non Revenue Water (NRW). It also argues that the supply to hilly areas is burdensome. Tax Payers Association secretary U. Anjaneyulu feels there is no rationale behind the VMC argument that uncontrolled PSOs are resulting in wastage of water, as the percentage of PSOs is less than 6 per cent.
