Chikungunya control measures strengthened

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The district medical administration has intensified control and preventive measures in Poovachal and Kuttichal panchayats, especially the Panniode and Uppanachankala areas, from where three cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. Source reduction or destruction of breeding grounds of mosquitoes and fever surveillance have been strengthened here.

In May, 230 fever cases were reported from Poovachal and 110 cases from Kuttichal. Of these, 29 cases are suspected to be chikungunya. The health authorities sent five serum samples to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, New Delhi, of which three tested positive for the disease. Medical camps will be conducted on Friday at Anacode, Uppanachankala and Konnikonam areas. A control room has also been opened at the district medical office (Phone no.: 2471291/2790828).
