Chikka leads after tense third round

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: There was some tension in the air amidst the leader group of the BGC-IGU Junior/Sub-Junior Golf championship at the BGC course here on Thursday.

An incident on the fifth tee-box when Amanjyot Singh was docked two strokes added to the friction. An uneasy quiet prevailed after that.

At the end of the third round, Chikkarangappa (Chikka) surged into the lead of Category `A' pulling ahead of Rahul Bakshi and Amanjyot Singh by two strokes.

The title in the `B' category for Chikkrangappa seems all but wrapped up as he leads Ashbeer Singh by ten strokes.

Chikkarangappa and Amanjyot seemed to be running neck and neck as the third round progressed. Both had birdies on the second and fourth and when the group was waiting to tee off on the fifth, Amanjyot asked Chikkarangappa which club he was going to use. The latter shrugged off the question. After the tee-off was completed, Chikkarangappa conferred with Bakshi as to whether the question amounted to seeking advice. He then lodged a complaint to the referee G. Ravindra, who confirmed that the query resulted in a two-stroke penalty under Rule Eight.

Amanjyot was docked two strokes and with the bogey he scored on the fifth, he ended with a triple bogey for the fifth hole. Both Chikkarangappa and Amanjyot scored birdies again on the 15th but the Karnataka lad pulled ahead with the two additional birdies on the 17th and 18th. Chikkarangappa had two bogeys on his card (the eighth and the 13th) while Amanjyot dropped one shot on the 10th and double-bogeyed the eleventh.

Rahul Bakshi meanwhile played with quiet efficiency. He had two birdies (the eighth and fifteenth) and ended with a bogey-free round with a card of two- under 68.
