Letters to the Editor
India has seldom witnessed the spectacle of a Chief Minister ordering the arrest of her own party MP from the gates of her house. We are only accustomed to leaders shielding their colleagues from inquiry and punishment. Even if their supporters are charged with a crime, leaders utter the oft-repeated words "the law will take its own course," which hardly ever happens, and take refuge in the innocent-until-proved-guilty argument in order not to act. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati deserves full credit for alerting the authorities in time to arrest BSP MP Umakant Yadav on a charge of land-grabbing a relatively minor charge. She has set a wonderful example in this era of nepotism and corruption.
C.N.N. Nair,
* * * Ms. Mayawati's action is unprecedented. It should send a message to the other leaders in the BSP that she means business and is committed to good governance. Other political parties must take a cue from her to set their house in order before finding fault with their opponents.
