Confirm claims

It is highly commendable that doctors in India have performed the first live combined liver and kidney transplantation ("Simultaneous liver and kidney transplants in Delhi," May 9). However it is not true that it has been done for the first time in the world. In 1999, the first combined live liver and kidney transplantation was performed successfully in Brazil. In 2004, the first similar transplant was done in the U.S. (Lahey). In 2005, China claimed to have done 31 such transplants. With the Internet search, it should be very easy for the media to confirm any first claims.

Dr. Rajan Ravichandran,
Director, Madras Institute of Nephrology,
Vijaya Health Centre,
Chennai
