M.R. Sivakumar passes away


CHENNAI: M.R. Sivakumar, Vice-President (Circulation) of The Hindu group of publications, passed away here on Thursday. He died of a massive cardiac arrest at his residence. He was 52.

A thorough and committed professional, Mr. Sivakumar joined The Hindu group in 1980 after finishing his MBA in 1977 from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad with specialisation in marketing.

Mr. Sivakumar revamped the circulation department of The Hindu, by introducing a systems and target-based approach. He was responsible for the introduction of modern and dynamic practices in marketing The Hindu group of publications. He also spearheaded the market research and publicity activities of the group.

His career in The Hindu spanned 26 years. It was only his second job in his career of 30 years. He was totally committed to the organisation and even spurned lucrative offers from other media companies.

Mr. Sivakumar did his schooling at T.Nagar High School in Chennai and graduated from the National College in Bangalore. He won the National Merit Scholarship and several prizes for academic proficiency while in school and college. After completing his MBA, he was awarded the Associate Membership of the Indian Management Association in 1981.

He joined The Hindu as Marketing Executive and became Circulation Manager in August 1987. He was made Chief Circulation Manager in July 1994 and became Vice-President (Circulation) in August 2005. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

`Pleasing personality'

Expressing shock at the sudden demise of Mr. Sivakumar, Lowe Lintas president and chief operating officer Pranesh Misra said Mr. Sivakumar was a very mild-mannered gentleman and a true friend.

His classmate at the IIM and leader of the Tamil Nadu Plastic Manufacturers' Association B. Swaminathan said Mr. Sivakumar had a pleasing personality. "He was devoted to his job as is evident from his long stint with The Hindu ."
