Mobio plans new services

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Revenues through GPRS (general packet radio service) access could be the big driver for mobile phones in the wake of falling voice rates, according to R. Vidyanand, business head, Mobio, a java-based application developer for mobile phones.

"Most telecom service providers are finding it hard to maintain their RPUs (rate per user) because of the falling voice rates," he said at a meeting in Chennai on Wednesday.

Mobio operates getmobio.com that offers applications and widgets that work together and are based on mash-ups of web-services. The California-based company has a comprehensive set of subscription-based services for the U.S. market. It had launched its services in India earlier this yearand has on its bouquet `Mobio Cricket Centre' that offers live updates of scores and a fantasy game. The services were launched to coincide with the Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean.

The company is now working on a financial portfolio manager that will help phone subscribers keep track of the share market and the Sensex. Mobio currently has offices in New Delhi and Mumbai. It is planning to extend its presence to other major cities.
