Nifty hits new peak

MUMBAI: The stock markets staged a smart comeback on Thursday with the Sensex and the Nifty ending higher on the back of a recovery in Asian markets in otherwise volatile trade. Contrary to fears of a sell-off in bourses in reaction to China's decision to triple the securities transaction tax, a strong Asian trend throughout bolstered the market sentiment.

The Sensex fluctuated in a range of 14573.81 and 14448.57 and later ended at 14544.46, a net rise of 133.08 points against Wednesday's close of 14411.38. The S&P CNX Nifty jumped by 46.15 points to 4295.80. It also touched a new intra-day peak of 4306.75. Operators' activity was confined to covering shorts in the Futures and Options. at the concluding session of May series. — PTI
