Fiji to lift emergency

WELLINGTON (New Zealand): The Public Emergency Regulations in force in Fiji since the December military takeover will end at midnight on Thursday. The interim Prime Minister and military commander Commodore Bainimarama made the announcement in a broadcast on Thursday evening, according to Radio New Zealand International. He said the emergency regulations had been put in place to provide safety and security for the people and to protect property. Cmdr Bainimarama said the regulations were being lifted after a security assessment. — Xinhua
