National and State highways passing through Bijapur district to be blocked on June 4 National and State highways passing through Bijapur district to be blocked on June 4

BIJAPUR: Various organisations, most of them belonging to the Lingayat community, have decided to block national and State highways passing through the district on June 4 to press the demand for banning the book "Aanudeva Horaganavanu" by Banjegere Jayaprakash. In a joint statement, the local unit of Akhila Bharata

Members of Veerashaiva Mahasabha, Basava Sainya, Sharana Sahitya Vedike and Vishwa Basava Dharma Mahasabha said that all the main roads in the district would be blocked on the day of the protest.

Agitation

Meanwhile, Basava Kedra of Ingaleshwar in Basavanabagewadi taluk, believed to be the native of Baveshwara's mother Madalambe, has announced an agitation programme.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Dileep Sajjan and Arvind Kulkarni, president and general secretary respectively of the organisation, said that the book should be banned and criminal cases booked against its author and publisher and that they should be arrested.

They released a copy of the chart of Basaveshwara's family in "Modi" language to substantiate their claim that the 12th century social reformer was born to a Brahmin couple.

They quoted a few stanzas from the books written by some of the contemporaries of Basaveshwara to throw light on his family background of the latter.

They alleged that the author had made derogatory remarks about the character of Basveshwara's parents Madarasa and Madalambe and sister Nagambike.

An indefinite dharna would be launched in front of Deputy Commissioner's office on June 4, and private criminal complaint filed against the author and the publisher in a Sessions Court.

They also sought ouster of Home Minister M.P. Prakash from the Cabinet for allegedly supporting the book.
