Alert against smallpox
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA:
An alert has been sounded along West Bengal's border with Bangladesh following reports of smallpox outbreak in Rajshahi district in northern Bangladesh. The reports, however, are yet to be officially confirmed.
The administration in the districts adjoining the border have been informed and the Border Security Force asked to step up watch on movement of people across the border, Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb told The Hindu here on Thursday.
"The reports have reached us by word of mouth. We expect some sort of communication from the Government of India if there is any official confirmation of such an outbreak in Bangladesh," Mr. Deb said.
