2 held, panchaloha idols recovered

NAGAPATTINAM: A special police team on Wednesday arrested two persons and recovered two panchaloha idols from them. Police sources told The Hindu that the team was formed to trace the idols after they were stolen from the Vembudaya Ayyanar temple at Kadinavayal near Vedaranyam in March and from the Kaliamman temple at Chinnathumbur near Velankanni in January this year.

Rayappan (57) of Mayiladuturai and Nagarajan (32) of Vaimedu near Vedaranyam were arrested. On interrogation, Nagarajan told the police that he had buried the idols in the backyard of his house at Vaimedu. The two were produced before a magistrate who remanded them to 15 days custody. — Special Correspondent

Major train accident averted

SALEM: A major accident was averted, thanks to the timely detection of a 3-inch wide `crack' in the rail at Kombadipatti on the Salem-Erode board gauge sector near here on Thursday morning.

Railway officials told The Hindu here that villagers who crossed the track noticed the `gap' between two rails and informed the officials. They also with the help of gang men stopped the Trivandrum-Hyderabad Sabari Express. The train suffered a detention of 30 minutes. Officials from Salem and Erode junctions rectified the snag. — Special Correspondent

Appointed

CHENNAI: The State Government has appointed Justice S. Mohan as Chairman of the review committee of the Town and Country Planning Act.

According to an official press release, R. Anbazhagan, a retired additional director of the Town and Country Planning Department, A.N. Satchidanandam and I. Anandarajan, former Professors of Anna University, and vice-president of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority will be the other members of the committee. The Director of the Town and Country Planning Department will be the Member-Secretary. — Special Correspondent

AIADMK to observe fast at Nilakottai

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa on Thursday said her party activists would observe a dawn-to-dusk fast at Nilakottai in Dindigul district on Friday to condemn the police action at Vilampatti.

In a statement here, she said the police opened fire at Vilampatti on Tuesday night when the villagers were staging a protest near the local police station. Five persons were injured in the firing, she added. The fast would be led by district AIADMK secretary and party MLA R.Viswanathan.

Poetry competition winners announced

CHENNAI: The Tamil Development Department has announced the names of those who excelled in poetry competition. The contest was arranged for officers, staff and the public. Nellai Ramchandran has secured the first place with a cash award of Rs.5,000, followed by S. Subramanian (Rs. 3,000) and E. Paramasivam (Rs. 2,000), besides three officers — K. Saraswathi (Rs.5,000), G. Venkatraman (Rs.3,000) and V. Prabhakaran (Rs.2,000). Consolation prize of Rs.500 each will be given to 10 poets. — Special Correspondent

EB worker electrocuted

TIRUNELVELI: A Tamil Nadu Electricity Board contract labourer was electrocuted on Thursday.

Police said that E. Radha (44) from Seelaaththikulam under Radhapuram police station limits was attending to a complaint in a transformer. S. Muniyandi (43) and C. Kani (40) of Seelaaththikulam accidentally switched on the transformer, killing Mr. Radha on the spot.

Police have arrested Mr. Muniyandi and Mr. Kani.

"Allow toddy tapping"

TUTICORIN: The former Defence Minister, George Fernandes, has urged the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, to allow toddy tapping in the State.

He was addressing people observing a relay fast here protesting a ban imposed by the Government on the activity on Wednesday.

Probe into explosion

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The District Revenue Officer will hold an enquiry into the cause and circumstances that led to the accident at a fireworks unit in Thayalpatti on January 2. According to an official release, the enquiry will be held at the Taluk Office, Sivakasi, at 4 p.m. on June 26. - Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Government College of Technology will conduct a five-day training programme on `basic lathe works and special machine operations' from June 1.

Xenos Technologies to market safety films

Coimbatore: Coimbatore-based Xenos Technologies will sell the new Armorcoat safety window films in India. The films will be available at all the 900 retail outlets of Xenos Technologies in the country.

According to a release from the company, the safety film is manufactured by Bekaert Special Film of the U.S.

The film is installed in safety-intensive buildings as it protects people and property from the hazards such as explosion, intruders, storms, hurricanes and terrorists.

PAT plea

COIMBATORE: The Planters Association of Tamil Nadu has appealed to the State Government to extend the benefit of reduced Value Added Tax rate on teas of all the tea producers.

The association said in a release that several associations connected with the tea industry in the State had appealed to the State Government to reduce the Value Added Tax on tea and the Government had brought it down to one per cent from four per cent.

However, the Government Order on the benefit was restricted to the teas sold by the Bought Leaf Tea Factories and the Co-operative Tea Factories, both mainly confined to the Nilgiris district.

"It is unfortunate that the Corporate sector of the tea industry had been excluded from this benefit."

Woman kills two children, self

PUDUKOTTAI: A woman committed suicide after killing her two children near Keeramangalam on Wednesday.

According to police, Neelavathi (29) administered some pesticide to her children, Brinda (4) and Dhivya (1) at her residence in Thondaiman Kudyiruppu near Kulamangalam and consumed herself later.

While Neevalathi and Dhivya died on the spot, Brinda died at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on Thursday. A family feud is said to have caused the incident.An enquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer has been ordered. Neelavathi's relatives resorted to an agitation near Alankudi demanding the arrest of Neelavathi's husband and his relatives.

The Keeramangalam police have registered a case of suicide and are investigating.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.27 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 611 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,000 cusecs.
