KANCHEEPURAM: S. Akshaya, a student of St. Mary's Girls Higher Secondary School, Chengalpattu, on Thursday emerged as the State topper in the Class X examinations in the State Board stream scoring 490 marks out of 500. It was jubilation on the premises of the school in Chengalpattu as her parents, teachers and classmates greeted Akshaya. It was her classmate Madhupriya who informed Akshaya about her achievement. Madhupriya came school second after Akshaya. Daughter of K. Saravanan, Assistant Professor of Urology at Chengalpattu Medical College and Hospital and Uma, a gynaecologist, Akshaya wants to pursue medicine so as to make her family a real "doctors' family."
Winning streak
A student of St. Mary's school since primary section, Akshaya has been receiving the general proficiency prize for coming first in class since sixth standard, her teachers said. "I was confident of securing a rank but getting the State first rank was a pleasant surprise," Akshaya said. She did not attend any private tuition as her school was against such a practice. "My favourite subjects are mathematics and science," said Akshaya who secured centum in mathematics. "I owe this achievement to my parents, teachers and classmates," she said, acknowledging the contribution made by each one of them in her achievement. J. Nirmala, headmistress, said Akshaya never hesitated to approach the teachers to clear her doubts and described her as a studious and enthusiastic student. "We start intense preparations for the students soon after the half yearly examinations," Sister Nirmala remarked. Asked how she prepared for the examinations, Akshaya said it was intense, but more of a revision. "She has been a consistent performer since day one," her mother Dr. Uma Saravanan remarked. Dr. Savaranan belongs to Tiruchi and the family has been in Chengalpattu for 18 years after he joined the medical college. "She visited the college library occasionally as a child," he said, adding the family had no plans at present to celebrate their daughter's achievement. The school, founded in 1934, is a unit of the Sisters of St. Ann of Providence, South Province, Chengalpattu. A government-aided institution, it produced a State topper when Sangeetha came third in the Plus-Two examinations in 2002.
