KARIMNAGAR: The indefinite `silent protest' launched by Boorla Swapna (20) in front of the house of her lover demanding him to marry her in Ratnagiri village of Bheemadevarapalli mandal took a new turn with the arrival of her lover, Gundelli Raju, on Wednesday.

Swapna and Raju of Ratnagiri village were in love for almost two years. They decided to marry, but caste was a stumbling block. Swapna ended up marrying G Jagadesh of Damera village on March 10 this year and moved to Mumbai. Jagadesh divorced her two months later after he heard her talking to Raju over the cell phone.

She returned home hoping to marry her sweetheart, but found that Raju and his family too had fled. She responded by staging a `silent protest' in front of his house from May 6 onwards. The entire village supported the `silent protest' staged by Swapna since the last 26 days.

Surprise visit

However, Raju and his family members made a surprise visit to the village on Wednesday with the help of the police and held discussions with the village elders.

Some relatives of Raju went to the protest camp and beat up Swapna for staging a dharna and causing `humiliation' to the family.

But Swapna did not resist and continued her protest.

The women of the village revolted against the relatives of Raju and asked them to perform the marriage of Raju with Swapna. They alleged that Raju was responsible for the break-up of Swapna's marriage following his frequent harassment on the cell phone.

When the talks with the village elders failed, the police and villagers decided to meet again on Friday in the village or Vangara police station to settle the issue. Vangara Sub-Inspector Muthaiah said that they had convened a meeting with the elders of both Swapna and Raju to look into their love affair and settle the issue.
