HYDERABAD: Heated exchanges between the Congress and Opposition legislators reportedly marred the House Committee meeting on implementation of GO 610 here on Thursday even as those belonging to coastal Andhra stayed away. Opposition parties accused the Government with delaying the implementation till next Assembly elections and specifically targeted Home Minister K. Jana Reddy. They charged him with virtually giving up on the issue of repatriation of as well as recruitment of non-local policemen. The three-hour meeting deliberated on the measures taken to replace about 3,000 non-locals working as constables in the Home Department with locals. Continuing their protest against their "ill-treatment", MLAs from coastal Andhra region led by G. Venkata Reddy kept away from the meeting. The Opposition members were irked by the fact that about 500 out of the 700 posts of constables for which recruitment was done recently were given to non-locals. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, TRS MLA T. Harish Rao said while Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy assured the implementation of GO 610 by June 30, Home Minister K. Jana Reddy "literally gave up" by saying the process would be completed by December next year. "Since it is clear that the Government will not implement the orders till the next elections, the only course left for us is to launch a massive agitation," he said. TD Legislature Party deputy leader T. Devender Goud criticised the "non-serious" attitude of the Government in implementing the Presidential orders. While the members were seeking justice to Telangana, the Minister pleaded for more time.
Government faulted
CPI floor leader Chada Venkat Reddy criticised the Government for lacking sincerity, as it was yet to cancel the deputation of officials in the Police Department despite several reminders. CPI (M) MLA J. Ranga Reddy said only 40 departments had submitted the information sought by the House panel so far while the implementation was confined to the Home Department. "Given the pace of progress achieved thus far, the GO will not be implemented for another six years," he observed.
