MYSORE: The ongoing drive against pigs took a violent turn on Thursday when three pig catchers from Madurai who had come to assist the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) were allegedly attacked by pig rearers at Vidyaranyapuram here.

A pig rearer also suffered injuries in the attack and has been admitted to K.R. Hospital along with the injured pig catchers Ramanathan, Gajendra and Manohar.

Two in custody

Two persons have been taken into custody.

According to reports, pig rearers, who have reportedly been opposing the drive, allegedly tried to prevent the drive by attacking the catchers.

They had first allegedly thrown stones at the catchers near Sterling theatre while they were rounding up pigs.

The city corporation officials said that one of the pig catchers suffered head injuries when he was hit with an iron rod. The police, who rushed to the spot, nabbed two of the alleged assailants.

The MCC has clarified that the drive will continue despite resistance from the rearers.
