`Sanskrit belongs to no religious group'

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: It is improper to belittle Sanskrit as the language of a religious group, former vice-chancellor of Sanskrit University, Tirupathi, Prahlada Char has said.

Delivering the valedictory speech at a three-day national seminar on `Sanskrit in the 21st century' at Calicut University Seminar Complex on Thursday, Dr. Char said other religions like Jainism and Buddhism and even atheist philosophers made use of Sanskrit to propagate their ideals.

The Sahitya Akademi organised the seminar in association with the Department of Sanskrit, Calicut University. Dr. Char expressed concern over the alarming decline in Sanskrit scholarship across the country.

He said the Governments did not show enough enthusiasm to keep up the glorious traditions of various universities and institutions teaching Sanskrit.

He lauded the attempts of some non-Governmental organisations in popularising the language.

Professor of Sanskrit at Calicut University Department of Sanskrit C. Rajendran presided.

Sanskrit scholars from across the country spoke on the occasion.

They included Hardath Sharma from Allahabad, Aruna Goel from Punjab, and Amar Singh from Haryana. S. Jithendra Nath, officer-in-charge of Sahitya Akademi, Chennai, welcomed the gathering. P.N. Narayanan Namboodiri, Reader at the Department of Sanskrit, Calicut University, proposed a vote of thanks.
