VARIETY: Cotton handloom fabrics from Dastkar Andhra.
Bangalore: Some of the best hand-woven cottons come from Andhra Pradesh. Our neighbouring State has over two lakh weavers and several thousands engaged in ancillary activities. Dastkar Andhra has been working in the handloom sector for more than a decade, recognising its potential to re-energise rural livelihoods. Understanding the relevance of handlooms in promoting the rich aesthetics of our tradition, Dastkar Andhra, a non-profit organisation, helps cooperatives and independent weaver groups market their textiles. Its design studio works with textile designers and dyers to create a vibrant new identity for handlooms. With the crisis in the agriculture sector reaching unprecedented proportions, Daskar Andhra offers weaving as an alternative in drought-prone areas and encourages non-traditional weavers into the activity. Operating a handloom does not require power and it is a low-capital investment. Dastkar Andhra's annual sale of cotton handloom fabrics, block-printed dress materials, saris, dupattas, handkerchiefs, and a range of furnishings is back at the Lady Jehangir Kothari Memorial Hall, 15, Queen's Road, from June 1 to 4, 10.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. This affordable range is sourced from villages in Srikakulam, Guntur, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Karimnagar and the coastal districts.
