ALAPPUZHA: The district administration and activists of the Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union (KSKTU) on Thursday jointly stopped attempts by a private contractor to fill two paddy fields in the Devaswomkari Padasekharam near the Pallathuruthy backwaters.
Lorries seized
Two lorries which were used to bring sand and gravel to fill the fields, which were used for cultivation in the `puncha' season just two months back, were seized by Additional District Magistrate K.G. Raju and the district administration's task force. The lorries were later handed over to the police. According to eyewitnesses, more than 20 lorries reached the spot this morning to unload sand and gravel when KSKTU village president Madhavan Nair, secretary Appukuttan and others opposed this. The lorries then moved to one paddy field south of the KTDC's Motel Araam and started unloading the sand. Mr. Nair and his team, who opposed this again, were reportedly manhandled. However, most of the lorries left by the time the ADM and the task force reached the spot. Investigation is on.
