BHUBANESWAR: With the Budget session of the Assembly beginning Friday, the State police machinery has geared up to put a foolproof security arrangement in place around the premises to avert any untoward incident. At a preparatory meeting chaired by Inspector-General of the Orissa State Armed Police (OSAP) Pradeep Kapoor here on Thursday, police officers from Bhubaneswar and other districts were briefed about their role during the Assembly session, which would be held in two phases from June 1 to July 13. Throughout the session, Mr. Kapoor, assisted by Deputy Inspector-General of Bhubaneswar Range Y.B. Khurania and Khurda Superintendent of Police Amitabh Thakur, would supervise the security arrangements. Some 23 platoons of police were mobilised to control movements on different roads leading to the Assembly.
Close watch
An Additional SP, two deputy commandants, one DSP, six assistant commandants, 10 inspectors and 107 sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors were deployed to lead about 68 sections of police force in the event of any trouble. The police officials were specifically instructed to keep a close eye on the Mahatma Gandhi Road, where several demonstrations were proposed during the 24 working days of the Assembly session. As on Thursday, the police received information about 10 rallies. Sources said about 50 officials were deployed in civil dress to report about unscrupulous elements present in the crowd. Mr. Khurania said anti-suicide squad was formed to prevent aggrieved persons from taking the extreme step during the session.
